How to help our work in Haiti

Good Samaritan Foundation of Haiti is responsible for OVER 600 children in our schools, 75 staff, 45 scholarship students of all ages, and plays a large role in the lives of 5 villages, 2 communities, and 400 families.

We are not always able to be physically present in Haiti, sometimes not for many months, AND NOW YEARS, due to unrest, travel costs, dangers along the route, the pandemic and also cholera outbreaks, etc. but our schools and programs run continuously in the very capable hands of our President Phelix Joseph and his experienced helpers, Odinel Viliom our VP and his construction company, and Agronomist Anousse Paul for the agriculture department, feeding everyone.

Our schools and programs are meant to maintain community while educating children and young people, and preventing malnutrition - but here are some highly significant side-effects of our long-term support which may not be noticed by the casual observer!

•   children are no longer sent to be ‘restaveks’ or child-servants in the cities, nor to ‘orphanages’ because families cannot feed them

•   girls as well as boys are able to stay in school, and enter higher education

•   better nutrition for babies and children means higher intelligence and ability in school, and in life

•   teachers and other staff can stay in the communities they are from, help their families, and earn

•   micro-credit loans are available to almost everyone in the community to increase resilience, which has raised the standard of living

•   young mothers are enabled to continue education, and start small businesses themselves, while receiving nutritional support and help with their children’s futures

So how can you help?

Donating $100 per year pays for the books and equipment and tuition required by one child! $200 allows that child to have a daily hot meal, 200 days a year. Total cost of school with lunch, per child per day, approx. $1 US

Donating $45 per year pays for books and uniform for a child whose parents could not provide them, even though school is free.

Donating $400 pays for one day of school lunches per school.

Donating $150 would also pay a month’s salary for one of the staff.

Donating $1 000 will pay the salary of a Kindergarten teacher for the 10 month school year.

$3000 will sponsor an entire classroom including desks, books, and teacher, for the year. This is long-term community aid to a place with no resources, no civil government and no infrastructure!

Donating $100 also pays a team of 20 farmers for a day, to upgrade public facilities such as road mending, drainage and common land maintenance - plus a hot lunch in our Cash-for-Work programs.

Donating $500 pays for a shipment of seeds or a breeding pair of livestock (goats) and their care so we can continue to improve farming on the whole island.
