Basic Needs

Because of the condition of this starving nation, water, food and medicine are at a premium.  It is impossible to educate a hungry, thirsty or sick child.

Water

There are two natural spring fed wells on the island.  They are in such poor condition that people must skim the water and bring it home to boil it before consuming it.

Currently, we have received the support of the Tortola Rotary Club in the British Virgin Islands, to address the water issue by supplying cisterns to help collect rain water and also the support of an individual named Craig Bach, a freelance mariner, who has sailed with his family on his vessel to be the first Mercy Ship bringing food and monies raised for this purpose.

Food

Like the mainland of Haiti, Ile La Vache, was once a flourishing paradise, in both commerce and trade. Blessed with rich volcanic top soil for vegetation, fruits and vast farms of livestock, it has now become a barren wasteland that cannot produce enough food for its people, let alone livestock.

It is common knowledge that during the great revolt, these outcropping islands became Pirate havens that abused the rich natural resources, the reefs and the people by the slave trade that ultimately led to the current state of poverty.

In short, the survivors of that time period were not educated in agriculture and as a means of survival turned the trees into charcoal to sell, which, in turn led to the erosion that stripped the island of its top soil and polluted the reef, killing the fishing industry.

In present times the people survive “hand to mouth” with fishing miles off shore to supply them with their only source of protein.  Now due to global warming, the fishing sloops have to sail ten to fifteen miles offshore to catch the fish that they once caught only two miles offshore. This creates the problem of sailing back to the island with a fresh catch of fish before it becomes inedible.

There are opportunities available for anyone whose heart reaches out to be personally or financially involved with a child in an effort that will touch an entire culture.
