Accomplishments

The School of La Hatte

Seated in the village of La Hatte, a series of tin roofs held up by tree limbs, is the acting facility for sixty plus students who have been given a second chance to create a better life for themselves.

The school consists of children of cast outs and un-wed mothers, orphans, and people who cannot afford to send their children to the schools that require tuition. There is no public school system on the island to attend to the needs of these children, making Good Samaritan Foundation of Haiti, Inc. School the only option for these children to receive any form of education whatsoever.

The school has several educational tracts. The goal is to teach reading, writing, and arithmetic.  Due to the changing times, it is also necessary to teach the languages that are being used in their working environment, primarily French and English.

The goal of The Good Samaritan Foundation of Haiti, Inc. is to teach the children of Il Le Vache survival in all of its versatile points, from health and hygiene, to agriculture and fishing. From auto mechanics and masonry to common social skills and civil etiquette.

The Micro Loan Program

The idea is simple: Haitian women take a small loan and commit to a program to improve their family's standard of living.

Just a few years ago, women on the island of Ile La Vache had a hard time getting together even $10 to start their own businesses. Now, thanks to a micro-lending program spear-headed by The Good Samaritan Foundation of Haiti, Inc., they are running their own home-based businesses.

Seed money from this project was provided through a very generous donation made by the Foundation's Administrative Director Pamela Squier-Solman.

CROCS Donation/Distribution Project

They're bright. They're sturdy. They're trendy. They're Crocs - the often gaudily colored plastic shoes worn on playgrounds, hospital floors, beaches and hiking trails all across the United States. And thanks to the efforts of The Good Samaritan Foundation of Haiti, Inc. they are on the feet of hundreds of children, women and men on the Island of Ile La Vache.

The Treadle Sewing Machine Initiative

The Sewing Machine Project grew from the idea of The Foundation helping to “mend communities”.  The collection of treadle sewing machines began in March of 2010. We currently have approximately 30 machines at this time that are being serviced by volunteers from the Senior Center in Lyons, CO.

Once The Good Samaritan Foundation of Haiti's new school is completed, the machines will be shipped and placed in a dedicated classroom with the building.

This classroom will be a place where women from the community can gather together, creating and completing sewing projects to earn income to support their families and the community.

The mission of the Sewing Machine Project is to give people a tool that will not only help them mend their own lives but also will give them a way to take an active role in the rebuilding of their community. When individuals grow strong their community grows strong as well.

Rainwater Cisterns for Ile La Vache

Access to potable water is minimal in rural Ile La Vache, so The Good Samaritan Foundation of Haiti, Inc. has joined together with Rotary International to develop a community-based plan to improve the water supply.

Funds are being raised and grants applied for to bring cisterns and build water catchment systems throughout the island.

Cisterns increase the supply of potable water, thus decreasing water borne disease and improving children's health. Community cisterns also help those responsible for obtaining water in rural Haiti: women and girls.

Books for Ile La Vache

The Good Samaritan Foundation of Haiti, Inc. -  with a strong focus on promoting education - has launched an initiative to coordinate the delivery of donated books to it's school in Haiti. Part of the larger, coordinated effort to restart the learning process for the island children.

Thanks to recently donated French textbooks from a Canadian benefactor, that focus has become a reality.
